Collection of John Lewis Gervais papers, 1772-1801.

Collection consists of transcriptions (typewritten and handwritten) and photostats of correspondence and other papers, chiefly letters to Henry Laurens from John Lewis Gervais. Gervais' letters (1777-1789) to Laurens concern business and plantation affairs including dealings with slaves and sales of rice (mainly at Wright's Savannah and Mepkin plantations); events and politics of the American Revolution; dealings with Creek and Cherokee Indians; and other matters. Other correspondents include merchant John Owen, Thomas Paine, and Henry Laurens, Jr. Also included is a fragment (1772) of Gervais' "Journal of the Proceedings at Wright Savannah" concerning conditions at Laurens' plantation on the Georgia border.

John Lewis Gervais (1741 – August 18, 1798) was an American planter and statesman from South Carolina. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1782 and 1783. Gervais was born in Hanover, Germany to French Huguenot refugees and attended schools and colleges there. He emigrated to South Carolina, arriving in Charleston in 1764. Henry Laurens (March 6, 1724 [O.S. February 24, 1723] – December 8, 1792) was an American Founding Father, merchant, slave trader, and rice planter from South Carolina who became a political leader during the Revolutionary War.
